I recently had the opportunity to attend a Faith Leaders’ Forum organized by Rob Oliphant, Member of Parliament for Don Valley West. Rob is a United Church Minister, formerly from a local Toronto congregation. He shared his desire to gather on a regular basis with local faith leaders to share with them what he is doing, issues he is facing and some of this thoughts. He is also very keen to hear from us, about the questions and concerns of our faith communities and the members of our churches, synagogues, temples, mosques and communities.
This first meeting was quite informative. There were only 5 of us out of many who were invited, but it was a good beginning. We were able to give our Member of Parliament some honest feedback on the concerns of Canadians… from our perspective. Rob was able to share his priorities and challenges as a new member of the House of Commons. Having the opportunity to sit and share with Rob is a great privilege and says a lot about him. I think it would be important to restrict reporting on the content of the discussions in order to keep the forum a safe place for honest dialogue. But it is important for people to know that our elected official is listening and cares about what we think. It’s a really good start!
