Canadian Capuchin made Bishop

corriveau1.jpg

Bro. John Corriveau, OFM Cap, Minister Provincial of the Capuchins in Central Canada and former Minister General of the Capuchins worldwide has been selected by Pope Benedict XVI to be Bishop for the Diocese of Nelson in British Columbia. [ Capuchins go by the title “brother” whether they are ordained or not. It’s part of the franciscan tradition to highlight our brotherhood as the key focus of our life and witness.]

Bro. John is a warm, jovial and compassionate friar who served in Toronto as Pastor of our sister-Franciscan Church of St. Philip Neri in Toronto.  Since coming back to Toronto after his ministry in Rome John provided some weekend help here at St. Bonaventure.  Our parishioners were certainly very happy to have him among us, as were the friars.

In many ways it’s a very sad day for our Capuchin brothers. It’s a loss for them to some degree. But it is also a great gift that the Franciscan family is sharing with the broader Church community. The people of Nelson are truly blessed to have such a wonderful bishop-elect.

Congratulations John!  Our prayers are with you.

  1. “Blessed are you God of all Creation” for chosing your servant -leader, Bro. John Cocarriveau to be a Bishop for the Diocese of Nelson, British Columbia.

I was fortunate to listen to his homily at St. Bonaventure. It was amazing! Most of all, I was fortunate to shortly talk to him after mass. I am sure he cannot remember me.

    Congratulation to you Friar John.
    You deserved it!!!!!

    Happy New Year,

  2. Not sure where I can find this information. Perhaps you can forward my request to an appropriate place.
I am doing some research on the men and women from my home who entered religious life over the years. I am particularly looking for information on Brother Juniper Lawlor (birth name was Denis Lawlor) from Renews, Newfoundland. He was a Franciscan brother .When he died tragically in a car accident, on May 15, 1967,he was living in Montreal. I would appreciate it if I could find an obituary, eulogy or other relevant information.on him. Thank you for any help you maybe able to provide.
    Helen
